Voices of Valor – Elevating the Impact of Veterans Treatment Courts

On November 21, 2024, American University and Verizon co-hosted Voices of Valor: Transformative Journeys Through Veterans Treatment Courts at Verizon’s Technology Policy Center in Washington, D.C. The event marked the launch of a compelling publication by the same name dedicated to advancing awareness and efforts surrounding Veterans Treatment Courts (VTCs).

The event highlighted the unique challenges justice-involved veterans face and the vital role VTCs play in addressing issues such as mental health, substance use, and reintegration.

Panelists included veterans, practitioners, researchers, and VTC mentors who shared their lived experiences and professional perspectives. Dr. Julie Marie Baldwin, of CRCP and American University and Kevin Rumley, Program Director of Buncombe County, VTC, provided data-driven and human-centered insights into the efficacy of VTCs nationwide. The conversation fostered dialogue on pressing topics at the intersection of justice, behavioral health, and veteran support systems.

The publication, Voices of Valor, goes beyond storytelling – it’s a platform for education, advocacy, and systems change. Through personal narratives and expert insights, the event emphasized how VTCs serve as a transformative alternative to incarceration for veterans in need of specialized support. Hosted in partnership with Verizon’s VALOR Employee Resource Group (Veteran’s and Advocates Leading the Organization Responsibly), the event demonstrated a strong collaboration between academia, the private sector, and community stakeholders.

Voices of Valor reflects an ongoing commitment to honor and support veterans through policy innovation, community engagement, and research. Events like this one continue to build momentum for expanding VTCs and ensuring veterans receive the justice and care they deserve. Download the flyer.
